올해 10주년을 맞은 CJ ENM의 KCON(케이콘)이 미국 LA에서 3년 만에 직접 K-POP 팬들을 만난다. 8월 19일부터 21일까지 미국 LA에서 열리는 ‘KCON 2022 LA’에서는 인기 K-POP 그룹의 공연과 한국 문화를 엿볼 수 있는 새롭고 다양한 프로그램으로 팬들을 맞이할 계획이다.
KCON은 전 세계에서 사랑받는 한국 음악과 콘텐츠, 그리고 라이프스타일을 경험해 볼 수 있는 페스티벌로, 2012년 첫 개최 이후 글로벌 K-컬처 붐을 이끌어왔다. 그리고 K-컬처에 많은 해외 언론인들이 주목하는 가운데 떠오르는 한 사람이 있다. 바로 인터뷰 전문 리포터이자 인플루언서 리암 맥이완(Liam McEwan). 2017년 첫 방문 이후 한 해도 빠지지 않고 KCON을 찾고 있다는 그에게 KCON의 의미와 매력을 들어보았다.

리암 맥이완은 만 26세의 인터뷰 전문 연예 리포터이다. 뉴질랜드의 라디오와 TV 프로그램에서 8년간 활발히 활동했던 그는 2017년 LA로 활동 무대를 옮겼고, 엘튼 존, 비틀즈의 링고 스타, 잭슨 패밀리와 같은 전설적인 음악인들을 비롯해 방탄소년단, 투모로우바이투게더, 갓세븐 등의 인터뷰를 계기로 전 세계 K-POP 팬들이 가장 좋아하는 리포터로 주목받고 있다.

Q. KCON과는 언제 처음 만났나?
Liam McEwan(이하 ‘Liam’): 첫 KCON과의 만남은 2017년이었다. 그 당시 나는 KCON도 처음이었지만, K-POP도 처음이었다. 방탄소년단과 첫 인터뷰를 진행한지 얼마 지나지 않은 때였으며 그들이 세계적인 스타로 발돋움하던 시기였다. 나는 KCON에 참여한 몇몇의 K-POP 그룹들과 인터뷰를 진행하기도 하며 직접 축제를 경험했는데, 팬들이 직접 참여하는 KCON의 방식에 놀랐고, 다양한 경험과 함께 활발한 상호작용에도 깊은 인상을 받았다. 무엇보다 팬들에게 자신이 좋아하는 아티스트를 직접 만날 수 있는 기회를 제공한다는 것이 매력적이었다.

Q. KCON에 대해 조금 더 설명해 준다면?
Liam: 처음 KCON을 경험한 뒤로는 가능한 모든 KCON에 참여했는데, 그동안 지켜봐 온 수많은 프로그램 중 팬들이 댄스 무대에 달려가 자신들이 좋아하는 K-POP 안무를 추는 랜덤 댄스 플레이 게임이 가장 기억에 남는다. 해를 거듭하며 KCON 참여 횟수가 늘어날수록 K-POP에 더욱 깊게 빠졌다. 그만큼 3년 만에 대면으로 돌아온 이번 KCON에 대한 기대감이 크다. 과거 참여했던 KCON에서는 아티스트들과의 인터뷰 및 소셜 콘텐츠를 제작하는데 열중해왔다면, 이번엔 그렇게 제작한 인터뷰 콘텐츠들을 본 팬들을 직접 만날 수 있게 되어 더욱 설렌다.
Q. K-POP 이외에 KCON을 통해 경험한 한국 문화가 있나?
Liam: K-컬처 관련 상품들에 끊임없이 감탄한다. KCON에서 만날 수 있는 아티스트 굿즈, MD 상품들의 다양성은 정말 굉장하다. 또, KCON에서 느낄 수 있는 팬들이 하나가 되는 문화도 좋다. 지난 팬데믹 기간 동안, K-컬처가 글로벌 팬들에게 집에서 할 수 있는 다채로운 즐길거리와 볼거리를 제공해 주면서 세계적 관심이 더욱 확산되었는데, 올해 KCON에서 이를 체감할 수 있을 것으로 기대하고 있다.
내가 K-POP에 푹 빠져있다 보니 덩달아 주변 친구들 대부분이 한국 문화에 관심을 갖게 됐다. 게다가 한인타운에서 가까운 곳에 살고 있어 친구들과 함께 한인타운 핫플레이스에 놀러 가곤 한다. 우리는 한식도 좋아하기 때문에 CJ를 KCON뿐만 아니라 음식으로도 자주 만나는데, 특히 나는 채식주의자라 비비고의 야채 만두를 자주 사고, 미국의 일반 슈퍼마켓에서 구할 수 없는 음식을 찾기 위해 여자친구와 함께 한인 마트인 H-마트에서 꽤 자주 쇼핑하기도 한다.
Q. KCON은 올해 10주년을 맞이했다. 지난 몇 년 간의 KCON이 어떻게 발전해 왔다고 생각하나?
Liam: KCON은 한국 문화를 사랑하는 전 세계 팬들에게 새로운 친구를 사귀거나, 온라인에서만 교류해온 친구들을 실제로 만날 수 있는 기회를 제공한다고 생각한다. KCON은 다양한 프로그램을 통해 팬들이 자신의 관심사에 맞는 프로그램을 다른 이들과 함께 즐길 수 있도록 해준다. 또한, KCON의 공연 라인업은 세대를 아우르는 다양한 그룹들로 채워져 있어서 몰랐던 K-POP 아티스트들을 새롭게 발견할 수도 있다.
Q. KCON이 3년 만에 대면으로 돌아왔다. 올해 KCON 행사에서 가장 기대되는 부분은 무엇인가?
Liam: 드디어 팬들이 한자리에 모여 좋아하는 음악을 함께 즐길 수 있게 되었다. 이번 KCON 분위기는 어느 때보다도 즐겁고, 뜨거운 열기로 가득 찰 것이라고 예상한다. 나로서는 올해 처음으로 인터뷰 진행자뿐만 아니라 특별 게스트로 참석해 KCON을 패널의 관점에서 바라볼 수 있게 되었다. 내가 직접 진행하는 패널을 방문한 팬분들과 함께 K-POP에 대한 나의 경험과 관점을 나눌 수 있다는 점이 기대된다. 또한, 팬데믹 기간 동안 데뷔한 아티스트들의 상품들을 구매하기 위해 다양한 부스 방문도 계획하고 있다.
또한, 이번 라인업 중 팬데믹 기간에 줌 화상 인터뷰를 진행했던 엔하이픈과의 만남과 스테이씨의 중독성 있는 음악과 멋진 라이브 공연이 특히 기다려진다.
Q. KCON은 인종, 나이, 성별을 불문하고 전 세계 팬들이 하나가 되어 즐길 수 있는 축제의 장이 되었다. K-POP과 K-컬처의 어떤 면이 전 세계의 많은 사람들을 하나로 묶었다고 생각하나?
Liam: 좋은 음악은 언어와 문화, 나이, 성별을 초월한다. 전 세계의 K-POP 팬들은 눈길을 사로잡는 공연과 뛰어난 안무, 중독성 있는 음악 그리고 스타일리시한 패션에 매료된다. 그리고 KCON은 이 모든 것들을 함께 모여 즐길 수 있는 축제인 것이다.
또한, K-컬처는 우리가 그동안 미디어를 통해 접해왔던 익숙한 문화와는 전혀 다르며, 이를 통해 우리에게 한 번도 경험해 보지 못한 세계에 대한 새로운 관점을 제공한다고 생각한다. 이 때문에 현재 많은 미국 아티스트들이 K-POP의 광고 방식, 소셜 미디어 마케팅 그리고 상품 전략에 큰 영향을 받고 있다.
Q. 마지막으로 KCON에게 남기고 싶은 한마디?
Liam: KCON은 해를 거듭할수록 아티스트부터 팬들까지 참여하는 모든 사람 간의 상호 작용이 강화되고 있다. 매번 발전하는 KCON은 항상 나에게 아주 즐거운 경험을 선물한다. 나를 포함한 KCON 팬들은 팬데믹 이후 처음으로 진행되는 오프라인 KCON을 손꼽아 기다리고 있다!
